Walden Behavioral Care has opened a new 6,000 square-foot clinic for the treatment of eating disorders at 100 University Drive, Amherst.

It is a satellite of Walden Behavioral Care Walden Behavioral Care, LLC of Waltham, a private psychiatric hospital which provides inpatient, residential, partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient care for patients with eating disorders.

Walden also has eating disorder clinics in Braintree, Peabody and Worcester as well as South Windsor, Conn.

According to a statement prepared by Walden, about 24 million Americans have eating disorders. More people with this condition die than those with any other psychiatric illness, the statement said, though only about 10 percent of individuals with eating disorders seek and receive treatment.

A majority of individuals with eating disorders also suffer from depression, post traumatic stress disorder or other disorders, Walden says.

Additional information is available on Walden’s website at www.WaldenBehavioralCare.com.
