Who We Serve

All Ages

Eating disorders can impact individuals at any stage of life.

At Walden Behavioral Care, you will be amongst people who have shared similar experiences, understand your journey and empathize with many of the challenges that you may have faced. With separate programs for children, teens and adults we can maintain an environment that feels as safe, comfortable and welcoming as possible.

It may be hard to believe that a young child can develop an eating disorder, but it’s important to understand that it does happen and that symptoms can often be overlooked at this age, even by medical professionals. The good news is that the earlier an eating disorder is diagnosed and treated, the higher the probability that a child can experience lasting recovery.

We at Walden Behavioral Care are proud to offer one of the nation’s only dedicated eating disorder treatment programs for children, ages eight to 11, of all genders and their families.

Our Pediatric Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) meets three days a week, providing structured and activity-based therapy for individuals and families in addition to group sessions. Family-Based Treatment (FBT) is at the center of our pediatric treatment program and is proven to improve outcomes in children and adolescents living with eating disorders. As part of our FBT program, we provide parents and other family members with the education, skills and resources needed to best support their child. You will take an active role in their treatment by participating in group and individual therapy and we will work together by providing a high level of transparency and collaboration during your child’s treatment.

Our pediatric program is available at our Massachusetts clinics in Waltham, Peabody, Braintree, Milford and Worcester.

The road to recovery isn’t always easy, but we will be here to support you and your child every step of the way. Together, we can overcome this.

It is no secret that adolescence can be an extremely stressful time filled with a significant amount of transition (between schools, relationship statuses and extra-curricular) and obvious changes to body chemistry and composition. To cope with uncomfortable situations, experiences and shifts in relationships and external appearance, many teenagers may opt to experiment with disordered eating behaviors.

At Walden Behavioral Care, we offer one of the nation’s only full continuums of care for adolescents of all genders living with eating disorders. We provide inpatient, residential, partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient programs tailored specifically to adolescents and their unique needs.

We incorporate key aspects of Family-Based Treatment (FBT), the most strongly supported method of care for adolescents with eating disorders, as part of our curriculum at each of level. FBT views you and your family as critical resources in the treatment process. You will play active roles in helping your child to reduce disordered eating behaviors, restore health and balance and resume proper adolescent development.

While this can be difficult for the entire family, we know that it works. Results of our independent study of adolescents completing our intensive outpatient program show that 75% to 90% remained medically recovered at their five-year follow-up.

We have worked with thousands of adolescents seeking recovery from a broad range of eating disorders include anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, other specified feeding or eating disorders (OSFED) and avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID).

We are so glad that you have taken the first step in better understanding treatment options for your adolescent. Together, we can work toward healing.

It is a common misconception that as we mature and age, old insecurities or preoccupations become less invasive. While the circumstances and reasons some adults develop or continue disordered eating may be different than in other age populations, triggers and the need for effective coping skills remain. Many adults that we work with on a daily basis report that they have been living with their eating disorder for decades.

We feel strongly about incorporating compassionate and affirming care into our curriculum of evidence-based treatments, experiential and expressive therapies. We use treatment methods that have been proven to increase successful outcomes, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). These treatments will help you effectively manage uncomfortable emotions/feelings in the moment, shift unhelpful and rigid thinking and develop skills to minimize chances for relapse. Depending on the level of care, we also offer individual and group counseling, medical management, nutritional counseling, expressive therapy, psychotherapy, relapse prevention and more.

We offer one of the nation’s only full systems of care for the treatment of eating disorders, so no matter where you are in your healing journey or what circumstances have brought you here, we have the appropriate level of care to effectively support your medical and psychological needs.
