Type 1 Diabetes and Eating Disorders

What is ED-DMT1?

Individuals with Type 1 diabetes and eating disorders are diagnosed with a disorder called ED-DMT1. Individuals with this disorder may exhibit many of the symptoms that are present in those with anorexia, bulimia and other types of eating disorders, or they may only manipulate their insulin to lose weight.

Warning Signs of ED-DMT1

  • Unexplained elevations in A1C values.
  • Repeated problems with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), which can be fatal.
  • Extreme concerns about weight and body shape.
  • Changes in eating patterns.
  • Unusual patterns of intense exercise (sometime associated with frequent hypoglycemia).
  • Amenorrhea (skipping monthly menstrual periods).

Medical Risks Associated with Eating Disorders and Type 1 Diabetes

  • Higher A1C levels.
  • Higher risk of developing infections.
  • More frequent episodes of DKA.
  • More frequent hospital and emergency room visits.
  • Higher rates and earlier onset of diabetes complications — nerve damage, eye disease, kidney disease and possible heart disease.
