Inpatient Type 1 Diabetes & Eating Disorders Treatment for Adolescents & Adults

Restoring Health & Beginning the Journey toward Eating Disorder Recovery

Walden Behavioral Care and Joslin Diabetes Center joined together to provide programs for patients with an eating disorder and type 1 diabetes. This alliance involves on-going training and consultation provided by Joslin to Walden Behavioral Care’s doctors and nurse practitioners. Upon admission to Walden, a patient meets with a Joslin endocrinologist who creates an individualized treatment plan. The focus of treatment is to help individuals better manage their diabetes and have the appropriate resources in place to reach a lasting recovery from their eating disorder.

Requirements for the Adolescent & Adult Inpatient Type 1 Diabetes & Eating Disorder Program:

  • Female and male, 12 years of age or older
  • Require 24 hour care

Treatment for the Adolescent & Adult Inpatient Type 1 Diabetes & Eating Disorder Program:

Treatment includes: a medical evaluation by a Joslin Diabetes Center endocrinologist; implementation of a diabetes treatment plan; ongoing medical evaluation and management, case management; individualized nutritional counseling and coaching; individual, family and group therapy; and 24-hour nursing care.

  • Endocrinologist

  • Nurse Practitioner
  • Nurses
  • Dietitian
  • Therapist
  • Mental Health Counselors

Goals of the Adolescent & Adult Inpatient Type 1 Diabetes & Eating Disorder Program Include:

  • Stabilize patient, both medically and behaviorally.
  • Implement a diabetes treatment plan.
  • Decrease use of eating disorder behaviors.
  • Educate patients about eating disorders and proper nutrition, with the aim of reducing anxiety, promoting coping skills and restoring hope for recovery.
  • Prepare patients for the next step in recovery.
